My Canadian is a chilli fiend and this hot honey sauce was created for a date night in with fried chicken burgers. So I wont pretend it is healthy, but it is certainly delicious! I combine three types of chilli powders to create a real depth of flavour. When combined with the butter and honey, it becomes a gorgeous sauce.
The types of chilli powders I’ve used here can be found at any supermarket; however I would also look into different chilli powders to change the flavour. A ground ancho poblano chilli would help build a more smokey element. A squeeze of lemon juice will put a freshness in there. This is a great base recipe for you to explore from! Look into what options you can drizzle the hot honey on. Fried chicken is an obvious, but it is equally delicious on grilled prawns or homemade fish fingers with a punch. Drizzled over lightly grilled beef for a hot and spicy salad or try it on my buttermilk fried chicken burgers.
The rise in variety of hot sauces has really kicked off in New Zealand. There are some gorgeous producers making some really interesting products. Culleys have been leading the charge and have now branched into chips as well. Huffmans is also a great option, and I would look into exploring a few different types. For those who are feeling adventurous, head to SauceNation for a wide range of hot sauces in New Zealand. In the mean time, this hot honey sauce will keep you well and truly satisfied.
